Ilse
Weber wrote over sixty poems and songs while in Terezin, many of which she set
to music. She worked in the children’s infirmary and sang her songs to and with
the sick children in her charge. In their heartfelt simplicity they are among
the most moving works written in Terezin. She went voluntarily to the gas
chambers with the sick children in her care. Over sixty of her poems and songs
were smuggled out of the ghetto and collected by her husband, who miraculously
survived several concentration camps.
