Élégie, La Tristesse Op.39

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine we have all become quite familiar with Ukrainian music and composers. Lysenko was the composer of the ubiquitous Prayer for Ukraine which exists in several versions by several composers and has been regularly appearing in concerts since February ’22. He is considered the founder of Ukrainian music on the basis of his extensive folk music researches, a project that was taking place in almost every nationality all over Europe throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Lysenko eventually published seven volumes of Ukrainian folk music. He is much honoured in Ukraine though still hardly known elsewhere. His Élégie is a short lament.
