The cancellation of our 2020 West Cork Literary Festival affects not only ourselves, our staff, our writers and our audience – there is a knock on effect much bigger than many might imagine.
With the loss of festival visitors, Bantry town itself and the surrounding area will take an enormous economic blow – empty hotels, restaurants & cafes, bars, tourist attractions, shops and so many other businesses. We hope to arrange some events in the area when the crisis is over, not just for our audience, but for the businesses in our community.
And there will be no Literary Festival brochure – detailed listings of our events, and a great souvenir every year. Without the brochure our advertisers, who support the festival in more ways than just financial, lose a valuable space for their promotion.
To address this latter issue, we’d like to introduce our advertisers here, to tell you a little bit about them, and how they’re addressing COVID-19 in their business practice.
You’ll find some pages to visit online and some things to look forward to after the crisis is past. We hope there is something of interest to everyone.
Note: As some advertisers had not yet sent in their ads for this year when the crisis struck, we’ve included their publicity from last year instead. The text information is up to date.
At Bantry Bookshop we believe in finding the right books for every reader! We provide new publications as they appear on a weekly basis, as well as offering current front list titles in our new books department. Middle and backlist titles can be ordered as required, and we work with you to find the books you want to read. More than this, however, we want to encourage people to read widely, to try out writers and subjects beyond their usual range of interests. Just ask!
Our shop is closed to the public, but we are still accepting web and phone orders during the pandemic lockdown.
As you are no doubt aware, there can be supply chain issues as many of our suppliers are themselves closed due to the Covid-19 crisis. We do, nonetheless have a network of secondary sources which allow us to source many of the books our customers want, albeit on a somewhat delayed delivery basis. Do let us know if you have any particular books you’d like to order!

Cork County Library has 25 branches & 4 mobile libraries covering an area of nearly 7,500 sq.km and serving a population of over 360,000.
Library buildings have been closed. The good news is that a number of library services are still available via Cork County Council’s website. Whether it’s reading a book, keeping up to date with the news, taking the time to learn a language or doing a course online, there is a wide range of FREE online services accessible to all library members.
For those not already joined with their local library, it is now possible to set up a temporary library card number to avail of these online services. Visit the library page on Cork County Council’s website and simply following the instructions.
Cork County Library has a wide range of online services and resources, such as online renewals, digitised local history collections, e-books and e-magazines.
Cork Local Studies Digital Collection, which includes previous exhibits, photographic collections and digitised material from Cork and Irish Collections as well as a selection of local history journals

Some of the dishes are ready to eat, some just need to be finished off in the oven to ensure a top quality freshly prepared meal.
Simple cooking instructions are included for all dishes.

Unfortunately social distancing is not customer friendly but for now a necessity. We can still smile and wave from a distance and be understanding that what we are doing is an even greater kindness. Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai (Bantry Community College) was established through the amalgamation of St. Goban´s Bantry and Ardscoil Phobail Bheanntrai and now caters for over 697 post primary students and has a staff of approx 60.

The Craft Shop in Bantry, has the best of Irish Pottery, Leather shoes and Bags, Jewellery, Wood Turning, Knives, Candles, Bellows, Baskets and much more. Just a glance through the window shows that this is not just another Craft Shop.

Run by Patricia Messom with the help of her daughters Sarah & Grace O’Shea, we are a Food & Wine store providing ready prepared meals, salads, cakes & desserts and providing light lunches. We are committed to selecting only the very best of local produce.
We stock a wide range of artisan products including chocolates coffee wines pastas. We also make a large variety of desserts scones breads quiches tarts and ready to go meals. An add on service is to provide outside catering, menu available at this link.

Truly an island paradise – Whiddy is a small haven of peace and tranquillity.
A small island, approximately 3 miles long x 1.5 miles wide & nestling in the sheltered heart of Bantry Bay, off the coast of West Cork, Ireland. Its inhabitants, mostly devoted to fishing and farming, are warm natured people who welcome both day-trippers and holiday makers alike.
Travel to offshore islands is limited to residents of those islands.
When this is over we will welcome you all back with open arms and we can’t wait for that day but that is still a little bit away.
