The cancellation of our 2020 West Cork Chamber Music Festival affects not only ourselves, our staff, our musicians and our audience – there is a knock on effect much bigger than many might imagine.
With the loss of festival visitors, Bantry town itself and the surrounding area will take an enormous economic blow – empty hotels, restaurants & cafes, bars, tourist attractions, shops and so many other businesses. We hope to arrange some events in the area when the crisis is over, not just for our audience, but for the businesses in our community.
And there will be no Chamber Music Festival programme – a highlight of the festival with its detailed notes enhancing the experience of every concert. Without the programme our advertisers, who support the festival in more ways than just financial, lose a valuable space for their promotion.
To address this latter issue, we’d like to introduce our advertisers here, to tell you a little bit about them, and how they’re addressing COVID-19 in their business practice.
You’ll find some pages to visit online and some things to look forward to after the crisis is past. We hope there is something of interest to everyone.
Note: As some advertisers had not yet sent in their ads for this year when the crisis struck, we’ve included their publicity from last year instead. The text information is up to date.
Located on the banks of the River Lee, the CIT Cork School of Music provides a bespoke facility in a unique city centre setting. The 12,000 sq.m. ‘state of the art’ school accommodates 52 music studios; a 385 seat rehearsal hall; a 120 seat theatre space; music library; recording and dance studios; offices; classrooms and lecture theatres. The building is fully wheelchair-accessible with a café and nearby parking facilities.
In accordance with Government directives, the CIT Cork School of Music is closed to students. Any classes or lessons that are scheduled to run will be delivered remotely by arrangement with lecturers.

We have created a menu for you to enjoy the fish kitchen experience @ home. With selected dishes that are easy for you to prepare with just the right amount of individually packed fresh ingredients.
Some of the dishes are ready to eat, some just need to be finished off in the oven to ensure a top quality freshly prepared meal.
Simple cooking instructions are included for all dishes.

Unfortunately social distancing is not customer friendly but for now a necessity. We can still smile and wave from a distance and be understanding that what we are doing is an even greater kindness. At Bantry Bookshop we believe in finding the right books for every reader! We provide new publications as they appear on a weekly basis, as well as offering current front list titles in our new books department. Middle and backlist titles can be ordered as required, and we work with you to find the books you want to read. More than this, however, we want to encourage people to read widely, to try out writers and subjects beyond their usual range of interests. Just ask!
Our shop is closed to the public, but we are still accepting web and phone orders during the pandemic lockdown.
As you are no doubt aware, there can be supply chain issues as many of our suppliers are themselves closed due to the Covid-19 crisis. We do, nonetheless have a network of secondary sources which allow us to source many of the books our customers want, albeit on a somewhat delayed delivery basis. Do let us know if you have any particular books you’d like to order!

Our music teacher friends are also providing lessons and most of them will do online lessons if needed.
We have a number of Yamaha Upright Pianos that we use for hire for exams and concerts. Unfortunately at the moment they are unused. We have decided to loan them out free of charge to students preparing for exams and unable to access good quality instruments due to the current restrictions.

Supporting musicians – building audiences
The National String Quartet Foundation is a legacy of the work of the Vanbrugh Quartet. Resident Quartet to RTE from 1986 to 2013 and Artists in Residence at University College, Cork from 1990 until the retirement of violinist Gregory Ellis in 2017, the Vanbrugh Quartet gave nearly two thousand concerts throughout Ireland as well as enjoying a successful international career.
The Foundation creates and sponsors projects which bring live chamber music to audiences throughout Ireland. It is committed to supporting musicians who wish to explore and perform the string quartet repertoire and to helping concert promoters present this rich and rewarding music.
The Foundation regrets to announce the cancellation of the spring concerts by the Vanbrugh in UCC and Youghal, & the concerts by the Lir Quartet.
In 2006 our piano festival began with a clear vision, to celebrate the piano and invite world-class pianists to perform in our local town of New Ross. Year on year we host an exciting programme of piano concerts, featuring original collaborations between our artists across a variety of classical genres, plus a whole day dedicated to jazz piano.

To stimulate the minds of budding Irish composers during the current time, the New Ross Piano Festival is delighted to announce a Composition Competition, aimed at 15–21 year olds based on the island of Ireland. Westport Festival of Chamber Music is an annual boutique festival in Clew Bay in the West of Ireland on the Wild Atlantic Way. International and Irish musicians are in residence in the town for almost a week in established or new ensembles preparing well-loved and new works for week-end performances.
