50. Crespo Midday Series
Kate Hearne, an Irish recorder and cello virtuoso, presents a multi-instrument programme of classic works for voice flute and recorder bookending Bach First Cello Suite. Van Eyck was responsible for collecting the holy grail of recorder literature, ‘The Flute’s Garden of Delights’, a selection of 143 tunes published in 1644. Telemann composed several sets of Fantasias for solo instruments including the flute. Bach's G minor Suite is the first and best-known of the set of six cello Suites. Composed in 1720 the Suites were for centuries treated as un-performable studies for the cellist's private laboratory until they were re-discovered by Pablo Casals. Now this set of 300-year old archaic courtly dances has an iron grip on the taste of modern cellists and audiences.
