13. Candlelit Late Night
Schumann described Mendelssohn as the Mozart of the nineteenth century, both were musical prodigies and both fulfilled the prophecy that those whom the gods love die young. It lies in the tradition of Mendelssohn’s more robust works like the famous Octet that generate enormous energy, particularly in the hypnotically powerful Scherzo. The Adagio soars and throbs with late-night desires before the wild celebration of the fiery Finale bursts in testing the musicians to the utmost – a riotous conclusion to the day’s music.
