Drawn from the Irish Traveller storytelling tradition, Oein DeBhairduin’s tale is a gentle allegory about difference, self-acceptance and different ways of seeing the world. Two slugs travel happily together as brothers, until they meet a crow who shows them that they have no home. Ashamed, one of the slugs decides to make himself a home, and calls himself snail. The brothers grow apart and become suspicious of each other. The slug with no shell-house feels ashamed until he learns to see that the very road he travels is his home, and so he shall never be homeless. The happy slug no longer sees himself through the judging eyes of others, but proudly asserts his place in the world.
Scéal ó thraidisiún béil an Lucht Siúil le Oein DeBhairduin, comhfhoilsithe ag Little Island agus Skein Press agus maisithe ag Olya Anima. Fréamhaithe i dtraidisiún scéalaíochta an Lucht Siúil, is fáthscéal séimh é seo faoi éagsúlacht, féinghlacadh agus léargais éagsúla ar an domhan. Taistealaíonn dhá dhrúchtín, deartháireacha, le chéile go dtí go bhfiafraíonn seanchearc phréacháin díobh cá bhfuil a mbaile. Buaileann náire duine acu, a shocraíonn go dtógfaidh sé teach agus go dtabharfaidh sé ‘seilide’ air féin. Fuaraíonn caidreamh na ndeartháireacha agus fásann drochamhras eatarthu. Tá náire ar an drúchtín nach bhfuil blaosc aige go dtí go dtuigeann sé gurb ionann an bóthar a dtaistealaíonn sé air agus a bhaile agus, mar sin, beidh baile aige go deo. As seo amach tá an drúchtín sona beag beann ar dhrochmheas neacha eile agus tugann sé faoin saol le mórtas agus le muinín.
