Two Quintets, five winds, five strings present this evening concert. Ensemble MidtVest will play Kalevi Aho’s 2nd Quintet, exploring an elaborate spectrum of wonderful tone colours and moods. The Finnish composer has written two major additions to the wind quintet repertoire. We programmed his 1st Quintet two years ago, the 2nd one is even more outstanding and is accessible even to those wary of contemporary music. Schubert’s great C major Quintet is from another world, ranging from deep mystery to existential tumult to earthy peasant physicality to an exuberant farewell to dance-crazy Vienna. This will be a performance with a difference as the musicians will be using gut strings. This is the third of five major Schubert works in this year’s programme, see also Events 3, 41, 73 and 85.
