This concert gives a special opportunity to hear two outstanding violinists. Viviane Hagner first played in Bantry over twenty years ago and many times since. This year she is joined by cellist Claudio Bohórquez and pianist Lilit Grigoryan for two of the most famous Romantic piano trios by Mendelssohn and Brahms at the height of their powers. Throughout history composers have had day jobs, mostly playing their preferred instrument, conducting, teaching and, worst of all, music administration. Enescu was renowned throughout the music world for his generosity of spirit despite his poverty so his concert life overwhelmed his composing life leaving us comparatively few works. His Third Violin Sonata is sub-titled
dans la caractère populaire roumain, is his best-known chamber work,
an evocation in sound of the mysterious feeling of summer nights in Romania: below, the siolent, endless, deserted plain; above, constellations leading off into infinity. Nurit Stark has a special connection to this mesmerising music.
