Woodland Variations is another Festival co-commission shared with festivals in Sweden and Netherlands. Fagerlund is one of the top Finnish composers. Roxanna Panufnik’s new Clarinet Quintet was begun during the chaotic aftermath of the withdrawal of western forces from Afghanistan and is a kind of homage to the richness and beauty of the ancient Afghan culture. The Quintet is called the Faithful Gazelle after a traditional tale about a talking gazelle and a beggar. Schubert’s gentle Rosamunde quartet concludes this quietly demonstrative concert.
