Anne Carson

Anne Carson is a poet, essayist, professor of Classics, and translator. She was born in Toronto and is widely regarded as one of the most original writers working today. A guest at the 2019 West Cork Literary Festival, she won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2026.

The Nobel Prize committee said they had selected her ‘for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature’. The Nobel Prize is awarded for a lifetime’s body of work and is regarded as the most prestigious award in global literature.

The accolade follows many awards for her writing including the T.S.Eliot Prize, a MacArthur Fellowship, a Lannan Literary Award for Poetry and a PEN Award for Poetry in Translation.

Her translation of Bakkhai (by Euripides) was published in March 2019. Anne Carson discussed the translation and read from a range of her work, including ‘Ghost Q&A’ in Bantry.

Anne’s participation in the West Cork Literary Festival was supported by Cork County Council’s Arts Grants Scheme Award.
