Bertrand Galen

Instruments: Makers | Violin Makers

Bertrand Galen is a French violinmaker and cellist based in Cork, Ireland. Trained at the renowned violin-making school in Mirecourt, he combines traditional craftsmanship with a deep interest in the science of sound. Known for his meticulous approach, Galen brings a highly developed sense of tone and colour to each instrument he creates. He is particularly admired for his violas, which are celebrated for their dark, resonant tone and rich character.

Galen’s work is guided by patience, precision, and a clear sense of purpose. Whether crafting, restoring, or repairing instruments, he applies the same care and strong work ethic, ensuring that every piece meets the highest standards of sound and playability.

His instruments are played by musicians such as Rebecca Jones, Cian Ó Dúill, David Ehrlich, and James Boyd, who value their responsiveness and tonal depth.

As a cellist, Galen’s understanding of music informs his making. He has performed both classical and contemporary music, collaborating with Glen Hansard in The Swell Season, and the Irish band Interference. This connection to performance gives him unique insight into the needs of musicians.

Bertrand Galen’s work reflects a rare combination of artistry, science, and dedication to the craft of violinmaking.
