- New Collaboration
This year, to celebrate their 10th anniversary, Skibbereen Arts Festival invited 10 other festivals to collaborate with them . We’re delighted to have been one of the organisations invited – and all three of our festivals are participating.
The locations, diversity and above all the high artistic quality of all the festivals involved undeniably showcase West Cork as Ireland’s Premier festival destination.
The Skibbereen Arts Festival runs from Friday July 26th to Sunday 4th August.
In their own words:
As we look back over the past 10 years, it’s hard to believe that a little post in the Southern Star would lead to a decade of wonderful artistic and cultural events in our town.
We were established with the aim of presenting world-class local, national and international talent in Skibbereen and, like the town itself, we have grown a little in size and a lot in stature over the last 10 years and are now recognised as one of the best arts festivals in the country.
Once again our town becomes one big art gallery this year with a top-class programme of art, music, theatre, film, spoken word, workshops, walks, talks and a spectacular street party!
The arts are good for all of us in so many ways. Come and Enjoy!

Alex Barclay lives in County Cork, Ireland. She is the bestselling author of Darkhouse, The Caller, Blood Runs Cold, Time of Death, Blood Loss, Harm’s Reach and Killing Ways.
For this special event she will be reading from her forthcoming novel I Confess
“A group of childhood friends are reunited at a luxury inn on a remote west coast peninsula in Ireland. But as a storm builds outside, the dark events that marred their childhoods threaten to resurface.
And when a body is discovered, the group faces a shocking realisation: a killer is among them, and not everyone will escape with their lives…”
In collaboration with our West Cork Chamber Music Festival
Clodagh Kinsella [soprano]
Caitriona O’Mahony, Marja Gaynor [baroque violins]
Kieran Finnegan [harpsichord]
Ensemble Dagda play a programme of exquisite baroque vocal and instrumental music. Featured will be favourite arias by Handel of Messiah fame, music played in Dublin Castle and Smock Alley during the eighteenth-century, and other favourite baroque music with Irish influences, including pieces inspired by Ireland’s best-known writer of the era, Jonathan Swift.
In collaboration with our Masters of Tradition festival – and with the Baltimore Fiddle Fair
Máirtín O’Connor is one of the most respected and best loved musicians ever to emerge from Ireland. As a soloist with the first Riverdance orchestra, through his work with De Dannan, Midnight Well and Skylark and also as a solo artist he has quite simply gone where no Irish accordion player had gone before.
Cathal Hayden needs no introduction to anyone even remotely familiar with traditional Irish music. A multiple All-Ireland Championship winner, he achieved world-wide recognition as one of the founder members of Four Men and a Dog. He is one of Ireland’s top fiddlers and his solo banjo performances are quite simply show-stopping.
Seamie O’Dowd’s musical abilities have become increasingly familiar at international level in recent years. Rooted deeply in the traditional music of Sligo, he has played in many genres of acoustic and electric music. He toured the world for a number of years with Sligo traditional legends Dervish and recently has played both home and abroad with the late Liam O’Flynn, Matt Molloy and Mary McPartlan.
